What Kind Of Bats Live In Michigan
There are 9 bat species in the state of Michigan. All of these bats feed on insects. They are all called micro-bats and use echolocation to search for their food.
- Big Brown Bat – (Eptesicus fuscus)
A colonial bat that prefers to make its home in bat houses and trees for roosting as well as in-home shutters and hot attics. During the winter they can be found hibernating in attics and walls. - Little Brown Bat – (Myotis lucifugus)
A colonial bat that prefers to make its home in hot attics and cabins. - Eastern Red Bat – (Lasiurus borealis)
A solitary bat whose preference is to roost in trees. Occasionally it may enter a home through an open window. - Hoary Bat – (Lasiurus cinereus)
It is not common to find this type of Bat in homes. Its preference is to live in trees. - Tri-Colored Bat – (Perimyotis subflavus)
A colonial bat that is small in size and is rarely found in buildings. - Silvered Haired Bat – (Lasionycteris noctivagans)
A solitary bat that commonly roots behind loose tree bark or even tall buildings. Fairly uncommon in Michigan. - Indiana Bat – (Myotis solidalis)
An endangered species who form large colonies in limestone caves in the winter and roost in dead or hollow trees in the summer. - Evening Bat – (Nycticeius humeralis)
A threatened species living in the southern parts of Michigan. - Northern Long-Eared Bats
Sometimes found under the shutters in homes but prefer to roost under bark or in hollow trees.
